"Don't forget your roots my friends, don't forget your family"

I popped up to Halcombe last week to do a few technical chores in preparation for my cousins 21st Birthday Party which will be held over Easter. My job was to file throught the family photograph albums and scan selected photographs on to the computer. I love looking at old family photos. I love being at my Aunty & Uncle's house. Its the closest I ever get to feeling like I did when visiting my Nan's house.

I've talked about my Nan a fair bit lately. I'm not too sure why. Well that's a lie actually I do know why. It is certainly no secret that my Mum has been triumphantly battling Breast Cancer for the last Five months. What I havn't disclosed is that almost nine years ago I lost my Dad's Mum, my Nan to Breast Cancer. I know that my Mum's circumstances are so very different, but I can't help but think about Nan, when all this is going on.

I often think about the similarities between my Nan and I. I thought that we had six similarities.

1) Our love of feeding people. 1a) Baking

2) Our love of babies.

3) The admiration of pretty tea cups

4) Stubborness.

5) Good taste in handbags/footwear

6) Long eyelashes

Well looking through the phooto albums last week I found another!

The realisation came after finally getting to see a Bridal Party picture from my Nan & Papa's wedding.

My Grandparents on their Wedding day, Rangiahua Marae.

My Nan loved Polka-Dots! Look at those beautiful dresses! Gorgeousness. My Aunty also told me that they were a teal-ish Aqua colour. *Gleeeeeeeeeeeeee.

Don't forget your roots my friends, the one's who made you, the one's who brought you here.

You are like your Nana, you can also add kind, a good listener, sensitive, caring and just an all round good person. Polly and George would have been proud of who you have become and what you are doing. Raewyn McMaster
